Baroque

"Inspired by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Baroque paintings, this shoot incorporates the dark and moody Chiaroscuro style of Guild Hall with the bohemian feel of the Chloe gown from Rue De Seine. What culminates from this is a shoot imbued with soft romance and intrigue. See more on White Magazine!" - Kate Drennan http://katedrennan.com/baroque-white-magazine/

Fave 1st Dance Songs

Seeing as it's valentines day I got all loved up and started reminiscing about my own wedding. I got thinking about our first dance... which I loved... hence why it is number 1... but since then I hear other songs that I thought would be pretty dam good too! Here they are, if your looking for inspiration ;-)

1. The Kooks cover of Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3H65ek9ZKs (totally biased here, love this song)

2.Starship - Nothing's gonna stop us now - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxyN3z9PL4&list=RD3wxyN3z9PL4 Gotta love an 80s rock ballad! 'And all that I wanna do is hold you forever, ever and everrrrrrr!!!!!!'

3. Gretta Ray - Drive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d0rwhERGBw 'It started out like a seed
And then it grew like a tree'

4. The Wannadies - You and Me Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACYiRRP14_w 'And we'll always be together You and me, always and forever' You know because some of us don't want to  slow dance.

5. Elton John - Can You Feel The Love Tonight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1hcc1QvM2Q - Just all of it! Have to have a bit of Disney in here.

Special mention has to go to Take That 'Rule the World' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KII1ruAfvsg 'All the stars are coming out tonight, they're lighting up the sky tonight, for you, for youuuuuuuu'

Style Inspiration - Daisy Gown

The Daisy gown by Rue De Seine is no doubt a stunner. It's a beautifully fitted gown without too much structure so it is still easy and comfortable to wear. The high neck emphasises it's classic style and the open back helps it to be modern.

I can picture this gown in a whole range of settings but below are some ways I would love to style it x

Daisy gown Rue De Seine

Makeup inspiration.

For the Daisy dress I picture very natural makeup to compliment the lace pattern. I see this gown at a rustic wedding so natural makeup would really suit.

Hair Inspiration

Because the back of this gown is too WOW to cover up I would have an up do. Probably with lots of braids and a bit messy, a bit like as if you slept in it the night before ;-)

Shoes Inspiration

I'm thinking Gold shoes with this dress, the colour of the lace would let you go for tan too.

Venue Inspiration

This part is easy for me ;-) Chapel Farm all the way! I had my wedding here and the people there are amazing. I didn't know about this gown when I got married but if I had I would have put it here for sure!

Cake Inspiration

Something rustic like this little gem from Verlena Cakes

Flowers Inspiration

This would depend on the time of year you are getting married, and I think that anything unstructured would go great with this look we're formulating here. There are some awesome florists that smash it in this style and below is a pic from Fremantle creative Botanica Naturalis.

Storm Chasers

A while ago (and I can't believe I haven't shared this lil gem sooner!) Alan McDonald Photographer, Ruby Tree Creative, Izzy Smithh and I headed out to the Freo coast line in search of the perfect spot to take some pics of the Rue De Seine gown Sadi during a mini break in a storm.

The clouds were so moody, the sand was so clean and the sea so blue that, as the sun started to set the perfect backdrop materialised.  And didn't Alan capture the most amazing pictures? I don't know how she knew what the sky was going to look like but Kate from Ruby Tree Creative had made 2 bouquets and a flower crown that complimented the scenery and brought it all together.

Izzy, our stunning model for the day, is perfect in the Sadi gown. As you can see this gown really does suit a tall and slim body shape and is perfect for a beach wedding. The beading on the shoulders is quite therapeutic applying a hint of weight to keep you relaxed during your big day. The classic pleats in the gown mean that there is just the right amount of flow to get those unique action shots without it taking over and getting in your way.

Enjoy the pics!

Truvelle Trunk Show Styled Shoot

So if you are a follower of Through The White Door you may have noticed me shouting about the Truvelle Trunk Show that has been happening this last couple of weeks. The gowns were to die for and I loved having them with us for the short time.

Seeing as we (myself and three legendary Perth creatives) were so excited to see the gowns for the fist time we organised a lil excursion to a few spots around freo and took some pretty pictures! The photographer was Peggy Saas, florist and stylist was Botanica Naturalis, hair and makeup was The Pretty Parlour and the models were Ellie Jane, Lisa and Flossy :-) (Links to their pages below... do yourself a favour and check them out, they are amazingly talented people!!)

Enjoy!

Truvelle Trunk Show

So PUMPED to announce that the Truvelle trunk show is taking place at the boutique from Wednesday 20th May through to Sunday 31st May!

This is your opportunity to see the amazing 2014 AND 2015 collections from the Canadian label Truvelle. I'm beyond excited to bring them to you :-)

So what is a trunk show? Well basically it's where all of the gowns in a designers collection are sent over for you lovely people to see. You can try them on, look super pretty and order them during the week. Once their time is up they are packed up and shipped on to the next lucky boutique to have their own show!

As you know Through The White Door carries a selection of gowns by Truvelle which is why we can have this amazing opportunity to home the rest of the collection for a short time.

The thing to remember with a trunk show though is that this is your opportunity to see the gowns in all their real life glory. So if you fall in love don't be afraid to say YES!!!! It's like Cinderella... there is a curfew and once the time is up they are gone. Whilst every gown at Through The White Door is amazing and beautiful we wouldn't want your gown to slip away to another state and that be it.

Here is a slide show of the gowns that will be here, have a look and if you like the look of them then book in :-)

Things to bring with you to your appointment

Nobody really tells you what you should bring to your bridal appointment so here is 4 things that will help you get the most out of your time at Through The White Door!

1. OPEN MIND!

One of the things that people mite actually tell you before your appointment is that all gowns look different on you than on a hanger. So when you come in and start to look, if there is anything at all about a gown you see then you should give it a chance.

Try on different styles too. You may have your heart set on a style that may not be the best for your figure/style/venue etc. You may be scared of a certain style (ie strapless) but it may turn out to be the perfect match! Just don't rule anything out until you have tried it on... You never know!

2. Pictures/Inspiration boards

Don't be afraid to bring in your wedding file or show your pinterest boards. It helps everyone to really visualise the day you have planned and can keep everyone focused on the task at hand. It can be very easy for people (particularly your entourage) to get carried away and excited to get you to try on gowns that would just not work for the aesthetic you are going for and this can lead to confusion.

3. Shoes

It's really handy to bring in the shoes you want to wear if you have them already. Through The White Door carries an amazing range of Jakii shoes so we have you covered if you don't already have them!

4. Family/Friends

It's nice to share this experience with your loved ones! Just make sure though that whilst you appreciate their opinions they listen to YOU and offer their opinions when YOU ask for them.

Remember that this is your wedding day and ultimately you are the one that is wearing the gown. You will be the one whipping out the photo album and showing future grand kids you in your wedding dress. Stay true to yourself and you wont go wrong.

When Madison Met the Horse

A while ago, before the boutique opened, I was contacted by Paris of Paris Hawken  Photography about a photo shoot she was doing down south in Margaret River for the Margaret River Bride And Groom Magazine.

The shoot sounded like it was going to be beautiful and she didn't disappoint! With a team of amazingly talented people and a cute as a button model here is a selection of pics from the day.

Dream team on the day was as follows;

Flowers; Courtney and Tamarin of  Sorella Flower Merchant

Model; Mary Beale

MUA; Gemma Skane Make Up Artist

Hair; Solutions for Hair

Footwear; Forever Soles Margaret River

Shot at Rails to Trails in Margaret River and Cheryl Pateman's gorgeous property.

Through The Trees. Photography by Alan McDonald Photographer

The Eve gown by Rue De Seine is a favourite in the boutique by many. From top to toe she is a picture of boho perfection. The detail of the embroidered silk is stunning and certainly contributes to the 'wow' factor.

Taylor Davidson is our model for the day, killing it in her nude stilettos and flower crown, with natural hair and makeup she and the gown shone through in the North Fremantle trail.

Garden Wedding

I recently had all of my beautiful fake vines delivered and the boutique is looking very green so I was inspired to write a small piece on garden weddings :-)

The thing I love about garden weddings is that its all done for you. Mother nature has the styling covered!

The dress featured in this post is Sweetpea by Sally Eagle, shoes are Vanessa by Jakii, Headband is by Petals and Thread and the vines are all from trusty ebay :-)

There are some amazing dresses in the boutique that are suitable for this setting and here are some pics to show it, enjoy xx

Botanica Naturalis

I actually don't really know where to start with this post... I just finished editing the pictures from my visit and I have had to take a minute!

Introducing Botanic Naturalis. Hidden away on one of the cutest named streets I have ever heard of, Little Howard Street Lane (...bless!), a secret garden resides. Producing some of the most unique and breath-taking arrangements EVER you must check it out.

Please excuse the pics, they are from my phone but I will be visiting again soon so will have some better ones. Consider this an introduction!

DIY Dream Catcher

I love a bit of DIY and lately I've seen some jaw dropping wedding set ups with these whimsical dream catchers so I thought I would give it a go and it turns out they are really easy and quick to make. So if your an impatient crafter, like myself, this is the project for you!

What you need;

(I got all of mine from spotlight)

  • Rattan cane ring
  • Doily's
  • Wool/string (colour to match your doily)
  • Fabric (I used lace curtains and a another lace type fabric to give my dream catcher a lil  dimension)
  • Ribbon.
2014-11-06 14.58.01.jpg

1.Start off by tying your doily nice and tight to the rattan cane ring. Use the wool or string to do this

2. Cut out strips of your fabric roughly about 3cm wide. The length is totally upto you, I went for around a meter.

2014-11-08 12.29.26.jpg

3. Tie your fabric onto the rattan cane ring. I looped mine on but you could also tie it on. It depends on how thick you want it to be. I found that by looping the fabric on it meant I didn't need to cut as many strips and it was cleaner around the ring.

2014-11-08 12.30.20.jpg

Keep adding fabric until you are happy with the dream catcher. I added some ribbon here and there so add a bit of colour then I trimmed the fabric so that it was all different lengths.

And there you have it! Your very own dream catcher! I made a few of them for a window display, pics below, click on the image to see more x

Bringing Sexy Back!

So it looks like its all about the back at the minute and I have to say I love it!

It's a great way to be sexy on your wedding day without going overboard.

At Through The White Door we have a some great gowns here with open backs or sheer backs with some beautiful detail to pop an element of sexy into your day without potentially causing heart failure to your grandparents ;-)

Here's a few below xx

Accessibility

As a once bride myself and having gone through the process of looking for a wedding dress it is important to me to be ACCESSIBLE!!! GAHH it annoyed me something chronic when I couldn't walk into a bridal boutique on a Saturday or a Thursday night (you know, the key times you go shopping??!?!)

Also, what if you just want to look? It's ok to come here and not try them on (although I reckon you'll want to!).

So you can pop in on a Thursday between 2pm and 8pm for a look, Friday 12pm-5pm AND Saturdays from 10am til 5pm. And if you like what you see and want to come back to have a dress up sesh we can book you in at a convenient time for you, like after work through the week maybe or a Sunday.

Bottom line is, there will ALWAYS be a time for you to view the gowns.

Gown Lead Times

Did you know that sometimes it can take up to 6 months to have your gown made and delivered?! Crazy I know! When you really think about it though that's not too hard to imagine. For instance Truvelle is all the way in Canada and isn't a huge outfit and each of their gowns are hand made my the designer herself!

Some designers have set delivery dates throughout the year so this also can play a part in how long it will take to get your gown.

Here at TTWD we carry WA designer Kokum Designs. You can buy her dresses off the rack so if it happens to be your lucky day and you fall in love with her gowns, and they are your size, you could be walking out the door with your gown on the day you came in looking! And if not, we can always have a chat with her about making one up for you and some of her designs don't take long at all (I'm talking a matter of weeks here!)

If you do fall in love with a dress that may take a while longer to get here than you planned there is always an option to pay a fee to have the order rushed and get here on time for your big day.

So in summary I would say that it is never too early to start looking. You can make as many appointments as you like, try on all of the gowns in the boutique, anything you need to make sure that when you say 'This is the one!' we can order it in for you and have everything in and ready for when you need it.

The inspiration for TTWD

I recently got the pictures back from the photographer for my own wedding and it prompted me  write a little post about what it was that made me decide to go down this crazy path opening a bridal shop..

Basically I had a really hard time finding my gown :-( I started with a google search of the standard 'Vintage wedding dress' and an array of images of Charlie Brear gowns came up and I was in love straight away with their 1920s gown. Only issue was.... it was all the way in the UK!

I tried to forget about it and searched everywhere for something similar but had no luck. I ended up buying one dress from a shop in the city.

Long story short we ended up going on holiday to Manchester and I had an appointment at a delightful boutique in Didsbury to try on the 1920s gown.... and it was perfect!

So I cancelled the order back in Perth and I got my dream dress!

I got married, had a lovely time, went on honeymoon, came back, decided to open a boutique!

You see the thing is that there are some amazing local vendors hiring out beautiful pieces, taking unique pictures, creating alternative wedding ceremonies and really thinking outside of the box but there is no bridal boutique to match. So this is what I am trying to do. Draw on inspiration from the wonderful experience I had during my appointment in Didsbury, surrounding myself with some legend creatives and curating beautiful gowns that you can't get in Perth. The gowns that compliment this fabulous direction that the current bride wants to head. If this bride is you then I really hope that you will find what you are looking for in the boutique, and if you think that there is a designer that I should stock please let me know!

Here's a picture of me and my legend husband Ryan back in March on our wedding day. The Photographer was Rebecca Mercia and we couldn't be happier with how the pictures turned out xx

Open for business

So there you have it, TTWD is now officially open for business! On the 26th September I was joined by family, and friends to celebrate the opening of the boutique. It was a great evening with beer and white sangria to celebrate and of course the iced gems :-)

I was joined by the amazing people behind some to die for vendors like Paper Fusion Boutique, Botanica Naturalis, Olive Farm Designs (available in store), Original Wedding Company, Birdsnest Bridal and Bird on the wall Photography, Little Love Story Event Hire and Rebecca Mercia Photography.

Nicole Hein took the pictures for the evening, and if you like them and would like some info on how you can get in touch with her please feel free to drop me a line!

My friends Kobi, Bec and Laura were my models for the evening and they all looked BEAUTIFUL in the gowns and I'm very thankful to them for playing dress up with me. Also my sister Kate, Mum Kath and Susan were there taking happy snaps and making sure everyone had a drink in there hand and food in their tummy's. My sister actually did the hair for my friends and I think she may have missed her calling!?

Lastly I would like to thank my husband Ryan for being a legend. xx

The biscuits were from The Cookie man in David Jones and were divine! Pasion fruit heart shaped cookies, freckle cookies and midget gems and Macaroons! Poppets pantry did an awesome job with the catering of some amazing salmon croutons and mushroom fritters. AND Poppets pantry are just down the road on Stirling Highway!

First Comes Love Fair

I had THEE best time at my first ever bridal fair and it was none other than the First Comes Love Fair at the Oxford Hotel on Sunday! There were some amazing spaces set up by local Perth creatives, it had everything you could possibly need for your wedding; dresses, styling, photographers, cakes, photo booths... yep pretty much everything!

Through The White Door took Charlie Brear and Truvelle for the day and my did they get an amazing response!

The flowers for the day were from Botanica Naturalis ( a fellow Freo creative!) and the industrial clothing rack was hired from Curio Warehouse and it was perfect for the gowns. I couldn't be more happy with the set up. A huge shout out to my mofo Sally for helping me on the day!

So if you manged to pop down to say hi and have a look I hope you went away with heaps of inspiration and vision for your wedding and I hope to hear from you soon to help you with your search for your gown
